On her first birthday Katherine learned to clap - and now she claps a lot... whenever she does something she thinks is clever and wants us to know about it in fact....

Katherine says a lot – pretty much everyone who meets her says how very chatty she is!  These are some of the words that she says repeatedly:

Mama
Dada
Ball
Cat (ca!)
Nana (for banana)
N-ma (for grandma)
Nes (for her bed – we call it her nest)
Baby
Buh (for book)
Tah (for cheetah – she has a toy cheetah)
Ta (when told to say ‘thank you’)
Shaw (for her shawl)
Mouse (comes out as ‘mao’)
Clck (clock)
Numnum (for food – I blame her Daddy for this one!)
Boo (when playing peekaboo)

She’ll also copy lots of things that you say to her – she said ‘best’ and ‘six’ yesterday after I said them.  And she’ll fetch all kinds of things if I ask for them: nappies, wipes, her shawl, her beaker, her cheetah, her monkey, her toy seal, her toy parrot, her toy clock, and her trousers are a few of them.  She’ll point out lots of things in her books when I ask her to show me: the white mouse, the butterfly, the frog, the baby etc.

She’s more advanced on the language front than the movement front as she hasn't taken her first unaided steps yet.  It won't be long though.  Just three days ago Mark saw her stand up in the middle of the room without holding onto anything, and she's been doing that every day since, so we know she has very strong leg muscles.  She cruises along the furniture but isn't quite steady enough yet to venture off alone!

UPDATE:  Katherine has TEETH!  Finally!  9/11/04 - I noticed that the very tips of her front two bottom teeth have emerged above the surface of her gums.  No wonder the poor little thing has been like a baby devil this week...

UPDATE:  7th September 2004.  Katherine has all of a sudden learned to crawl rather than just slither around and pull herself up on furniture.  She's been zooming around the place and hasn't given me much time to become accustomed to this new creature who can disappear in a flash.

UPDATE:  31st August 2004.  I took Katherine to be weighed on Thursday and she's now an impressive 20lb 13oz.  She has begun to stand - I've seen her pull herself up against the sofa and her cot bars and changing table.  See picture of her standing!

UPDATE: Michael and Georgia's wedding.  Click here to view the pictures.  Katherine was very well behaved and came away with spoils of a purple balloon and a new rattle.

UPDATEI've updated Katherine's website with pictures of our holiday in Brittany - click here to view.

Update: 12th May 2004.  Katherine sits up and plays for a little while now, though she is still a bit unsteady sometimes and has to be caught before she keels over.

She has developed a huge interest in the cat (poor Merlin), who is now having to earn his keep (at last) by amusing Katherine (see pictures).  He's really good with her though, despite all the fur-grabbing.  We think he likes it, secretly... he certainly comes back for more often enough.

Katherine's had dry skin for the last month or so, which is gradually improving with lots of oil baths, making her as slippery as a little seal.

She's much better about going out now and has been to visit the four kittens at her grand-mas house.   Pictures will be posted...

UPDATE: 18th March.  Katherine had her last set of injections yesterday.  She was better than the other three times afterwards but still screamed with outrage while they were being done and tears ran down her face.  The nurse got quite upset (she can't be hardened to it yet!) and said that Katherine was the worst one she's seen for quite some time!  Poor little baby, she's allergic to pain.

When she isn't being injected she is always smiling or giggling!  If I tickle her tummy or kiss her cheek she often squeals with excitement.  Likewise if I sing (she has no taste!)  She has a lovely giggle, it sounds like she's on helium (See picture

Aggggghhhhhhhhhh!

What is this creature?

I've been buying a couple of bits and pieces for Katherine on ebay lately and couldn't resist this musical junglepals crocodile mirror for her....she loves it!  She looks utterly horrified in this picture, but really she was smiling away to herself and cooing at it!

Katherine's getting ever so clever! She's been able to pick toys up from the floor for a few weeks now and pass them from hand to hand.  She can be completely distracted by a toy now and smiles and laughs when her favourite songs come on.  Son of a Preacher Man is still top of her list, even if the rest of her household is heartily sick of it... (24.03.04)

05.03.03

We have had a few little developments recently.  Katherine has started to kiss me and her grandma by sucking our cheeks (not scratchy Daddy though).

She's so strong that she pulled one of her dangling playmat toys right off.  It hit her in the face and she looked a bit surprised.

Katherine can also sit up for a quite few seconds unaided now, but only if she's in the mood!

She is big enough for  her nighties that her grandma made for her and has started wearing them to nest.  See picture.

Round Two....18.02.03

It was our least favourite activity today - visiting to the clinic for the 2nd round of injections.  Fortunately Katherine was much better this time round.  Still screams, but not so prolonged.

First Wedding – Congratulations Richard and Diana (14.02.04)

We took Katherine along to Richard and Diana Gobs’ wedding, at the Three Mile Cross Church Centre.  Katherine was very good indeed.  She didn’t make a squeak through the whole service.  When I saw that she was getting hungry towards the end of the sermon I whisked her away.  She liked the choir’s singing and smiled to herself but wasn’t so keen on the clapping!

First Taste of Solid food.  13.02.04

Well solid-ish anyway….

I tried Katherine on 2 teaspoons of baby rice mixed with milk.  She seemed quite interested really.  Unfortunately that night she then decided to wake up 3 times in the night, when she usually sleeps through.  Hopefully this was just a blip.  Of course, it was Friday the thirteenth….

I HATE THE BABY CLINIC! 12.02.04

An angel at home, a devil outside...

Katherine is having one of her 'angel' spells at the moment and has been absolute sweetness and light for the last few days.  I had hopes we might avoid our usual scene at the baby clinic.  However,  the second we walked in, her little mouth turned down and she started to yowl.

So I gave in and asked the health visitor to weigh her with clothes on - not as accurate, but a lot less hassle.... She likes her own way.  Who does that remind me of?

BABYCOOK! 11.02.03

I bid for a babycook on ebay and won it (after a last minute battle with another bidder :)  It was delivered today.

It steams and puree all in one so I can easily make my own baby food for Katherine.  I'm going to give it a go next week, when she'll have her first taste of solid food.

NEW TRANSPORT!

Katherine let me know that she no longer felt it appropriate that she should be carried in a sling.  Too hot, and she couldn't see the interesting world outside!  So I have now finally given in and bought her a stroller.   We had our first outing in it to Reading on Tuesday evening, 6th January (see below).  It proved popular.

I won't have grown into this coat for AGES you know...

MUMMY, IT WAS TERRIBLE! HOW COULD YOU?

I knew Katherine wasn't going to like it given her reaction to the Guthrie test... but I still wasn't quite prepared for how much she hated the first round of her vaccines on Wednesday 7th January.

She sat on my lap in the surgery, all quiet and good, for twenty minutes while we waited for her appointment.  Three other babies came in and out and we heard a ittle bit of upset crying from most of them, but they calmed down in a minute or two....

Katherine screamed like we were trying to murder her and was inconsolabe in the waiting room.  Four other babies were waiting there for their injections when we came out and she let them all know how awful it was - whereupon every one of them began to scream in chorus.  And I had to wait five minutes in the surgery to check she wasn't going to have a reaction (!) to the vaccines.  Each minute felt like twenty with the chorus of screams...

However, by the time I write this (Friday 9th January) Katherine has just about forgiven me and is back to the happy smiley little girl I missed over the last two days.
